Indigenous Faith Day celebrated across Arunachal

ITANAGAR, Dec 31: The followers of Donyi-Poloism, Rangfraism and Intayaism across the state celebrated the Indigenous Faith Day with a pledge to preserve, promote and rejuvenate their indigenous faiths and beliefs for posterity.

The  Day was centrally celebrated at Nirjuli under the banner of Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) with a day-long programme.

Apart from a ‘massive’ car and two-wheelers rally taken out from RK Mission helipad ground here to the venue, Nyikum Niya Ground, Nirjuli via Doimukh earlier in the morning, display of several colourful cultural programmes by different cultural troupes from the state capital complex were the center of attractions of the function.

Addressing the people, the chief guest said  that Donyi-Polo (Sun and Moon God), as worshipped by the people of Arunachal Pradesh, was the mother of all religions.

He appealed people to stick to ‘religious tolerance’, respect others’ religions, upholding the secular fabric of the country. He, however, said one should not overlook his or her constitutional right but to protect one’s own religion, saying “invasion of culture” and “invasion of religion” are not good for this democratic country. He said that IFCSAP’s movement will only be a success when the people of state upkeep their own indigenous faiths and culture.

The other speakers—Vanavashi Kalyan Ashram organizing secretary Atul Jog, Higher & Technical Education Director Dr Joram Begi & Joint Director Dr Tejum Padu, IFCSAP president Nabam Atum and general secretary Augung Bengia—made a clarion call to their fellow believers of indigenous faiths to uphold the ‘pristine glory’ inherited from their ancestors. The IFCSAP general secretary said that every faith and culture has the right to exist and nobody should disturb them to change it through force or allurement.  As the day (Dec 31) was declared state holiday by the state govt to facilitate the people to celebrate the Indigenous Faith Day in large scale, the function witnessed a massive turnout but in middle of it, the weather god turned a matter of concern for organizers for a few moment.

At Ngopok,  about 20 km away from Pasighat under Mebo sub-division, Indigenous people proclaimed the dignity and solemnity of the indigenous faith and culture. Their colorful procession projected the diverse and rich Adi tradition through folk music. Tableaus depicted various facets of the simple yet rich and colourful indigenous lifestyle.

The procession culminated at the Ngopok Gangging Ground, where ceremonial flag was hoisted and special prayers were offered in the Gangging led by the Chief Guest Onyok Pertin DIPRO.
